Which Luggage Should a Missionary Take?

A suitcase can look just right in the store and feel very different when you are the one moving three pieces and over 100 pounds of gear across cobblestone. Choose luggage for the trip your missionary will actually take.

Start with the instructions, then the airline

Check the current mission and MTC packing guidance first. Once travel is booked, check that airline's size and weight allowances, including connections; our post on what luggage fits the airline limits covers the numbers. Grand Tour luggage meets all airline requirements, but you still have to weigh each piece and balance the load among the bags.

Weigh the overweight fee against shipping

Sometimes paying an overweight fee is simply what it takes to get all the gear to the mission, and that is fine. Shipping extra gear later is often far more expensive, and less reliable, than paying a little more at the check-in counter.

Guarantees matter on luggage, too

A mission is just the first trip these bags will take. Grand Tour luggage carries a 10-year guarantee, so the same set keeps working long after the mission, through college, travel, vacations, and road trips.

Think about where the bags live between transfers

Three-piece sets nest inside each other and roll into a corner or under a bed, which saves space in a small mission apartment. Two large pieces take far more room. If you are deciding between configurations, picture the apartment as well as the airport.
