Plan on two checked bags. Most missionaries travel with two checked bags plus a carry-on and a personal item. Heads-up: international economy fares today usually include only the first checked bag free — the second (and any checked bag on a domestic leg) typically costs a fee, and those went up again in 2026. Always confirm the free-bag count and fees for your missionary's exact ticket.

Know the size and weight limits. On most major carriers each checked bag must stay under 50 lbs and 62 linear inches (length + width + height) in economy — but limits vary by airline and route, so check the exact carrier.

Size to the mission. A 30–32″ suitcase is the sweet spot — big enough for two years, small enough to manage on buses and stairs. Hard-shell cases protect better and roll easier.

Weigh before you go. A luggage scale saves you from repacking at the counter (and overweight fees). Balance the weight so neither bag is over.

Buy for the long haul. Good luggage outlasts the mission and follows them to college and beyond.

Tip: Drop an AirTag in each bag (allowed in checked and carry-on — just leave the battery installed) so a lost bag gets found fast.
