The Small Things Worth Packing for Your Mission

Once the big clothing decisions are made, what's left is mostly small stuff. Pause and picture an ordinary day: getting dressed, carrying a bag, washing clothes, keeping a little piece of home close by.

Make a laundry plan

Check the current instructions for the MTC and the mission to see how laundry works and how it's paid for, before anyone fills a pouch with coins or bulky supplies. A permitted stain-treatment product can be handy, but knowing how to use it matters more than packing a whole shelf of them.

Try the water bottle in the actual bag

A bottle that stays home because it's awkward to carry isn't helping anyone. Pack the daily bag, add the bottle, and walk around with it. Check the weight and how easy it is to reach. The same rehearsal tends to turn up other items that don't need to come along.

Bring a small connection to home

A family photo takes almost no space and gives your missionary something personal to share when it's appropriate. Pick a size that slips easily into a journal or a protective sleeve.

Leave room to learn

You don't have to anticipate every future preference. Jon served his mission in Uruguay and came to prefer many of the everyday products he bought locally. Availability differs by destination, so follow mission guidance on anything essential or hard to replace.

Do one final clothing and shoe rehearsal

Try the shoes with the socks your missionary plans to wear. Check closures, toe room, and where the arch support sits. The Dot Darcy has an adjustable closure and a rounded toe, and its fit still deserves a proper try-on. If carrying less is a priority, compare the daily essentials against the pocket layout of the Flex UP Pant.

Pack for a real week of missionary life, with the current official list as the guide. A manageable suitcase is a good goal.
