Sister Missionary Shoes: Style vs. Comfort

Sister missionary shoes need to look polished. They need to be appropriate. They need to work with dresses and skirts. They need to pack well. Most importantly, they need to be comfortable enough for long missionary days and they need to last the whole 18 months.

Countless sisters tell a very similar story.  They bring a single "comfortable" pair of shoes along with cute ballet flats, dressy tennis shoes, or other fashion shoes.  After a few month in the field, they stop caring about how the shoes look and end up only wearing the "ugly" comfortable pair and then they call home to have more comfort pairs sent ASAP!

Since July 10, 1997, we have helped 593,888 Elders and Sisters with their mission shopping. One thing we have learned is that the wrong cute shoe can cause real problems for Sisters, especially when the shoe is built for a few hours instead of a full day of missionary work.

The danger of cute but uncomfortable shoes

Most dress shoes are designed for short events: church, work, weddings, school presentations, or photos. A mission asks much more from a shoe. Sisters may walk for miles, stand for long periods, bike in some areas, climb floor after floor of stairs, walk through rough weather, and wear the same favorite shoes over and over.

If a shoe has poor support, a stiff sole, a narrow toe box, slippery traction, or an uncomfortable heel, the problem may not show up immediately. It may show up after a few long days of walking.

Without the right support and shoe construction, foot pain can affect ankles, knees, hips, posture, energy, and mood. That is why comfort is not a small detail. It is part of mission preparation.

What to look for in Sister missionary shoes

Good Sister missionary shoes should feel polished but practical.

Look for:

  • Comfortable "orthotic style" insole, preferably with hard plastic inserts under to soft foam to keep the heel and arch cushion from collapsing
  • A stable sole made of rubber or a rubber blend
  • Extra room in the toe box that allows toes to splay out
  • A secure fit over the instep
  • Breathable or quality materials.  High quality leather is best.
  • Mission-appropriate styling
  • Traction for real walking
  • A design that works with many different missionary outfits
  • Durability for repeated wear

Fit matters more than almost anything

Shoes that are too small can lead to blisters, ingrown toenails, and daily discomfort.

Toes can spread over long walking days, so a shoe that feels snug in the store may feel too tight after hours of walking. We use a European comfort fit concept on our women's shoes. The shoe fits the arch and instep while leaving room in the toe box for comfort over long days.

That little bit of room can make a big difference.

Socks and liners help

Sisters do not always want visible socks with every outfit, but some kind of barrier can help.

No-show socks or liners can create a comfortable layer between the foot and the shoe. They can reduce rubbing, help manage moisture, and make shoes more comfortable through the day.

This is especially helpful during the break-in period or in warm climates.

Rotate shoes when possible

Most missionaries should plan on at least two mission-ready pairs of shoes and three or more pairs if serving outside of the USA.  Just a side note:  It is far less expensive to take extra pairs than to ship them overseas.  Many sisters find out too late that they can't find their size in the country where they are serving.  If their parents ship shoes to them, there is a risk that the shoes never arrive.

Rotation gives each pair a chance to air out, helps reduce odor and microbial growth, and lets the sole and insole rebound before the next wear. On hot or rainy days, it is a good idea to remove the insoles during the shoes' rest day.

If your missionary strongly prefers one style or color, taking two pairs of the same exact shoe can be smarter than buying one pair they will never wear.

Why Dot shoes exist

Dot shoes were inspired by current US "comfort/walking" styles, but also include influence from Paris Fashion Week modified for Sister missionary demands.

That distinction matters.

We do not want Sisters to feel like they have to choose between looking current and taking care of their feet. Dot shoes are designed to bring polished style together with missionary-day comfort, support, and wearability.

They are shoes for real missionary work comfort and durability, not just photos.
