Mission Grade vs. Business Grade Clothing

A lot of clothes that look right for church, school, or the office are not built for missionary life.

Missionaries walk, bike, serve, sweat, pack light, repeat outfits, face changing weather, and need to look appropriate every day. That is a very different job than sitting in an office or wearing something nice for a few hours on Sunday.

Since July 10, 1997, we have helped 593,888 Elders and Sisters with their mission shopping. Over that time, we have learned a LOT about the difference between clothing that looks mission appropriate and clothing that is actually built for missionary life.

That difference is what we mean by Mission Grade.

What Mission Grade means

Mission Grade clothing should do more than meet a dress code. It should be:

  • Comfortable for long days
  • Durable enough for repeated wear
  • Easy to care for
  • Appropriate for missionary standards
  • Climate-aware
  • Packable
  • Practical for walking, biking, service, and meetings
  • Protected whenever possible by a real guarantee

The goal is not to make missionaries look like they are wearing technical outdoor gear. The goal is to help them look sharp while wearing clothing built for the actual demands of a mission.

Why business-grade clothing can fall short

Business clothing is usually designed for offices, meetings, and occasional formal use. That is not the same as missionary life.

A business suit might look beautiful, but it may have a fully lined jacket, limited stretch, finer fabrics that wear quickly, and dry-clean-only construction. Dress pants may look polished but lack the stretch, cooling, and pocket reinforcement missionaries need. Dress shoes may be fine for a few hours, but not for miles of walking.

That is why something can be technically appropriate and still be a poor mission choice.

Suits: mission life is hard on pants

One of the most common suit mistakes is buying a 1-pant business suit.

Pants usually wear out faster than jackets. Missionaries sit, bike, walk, kneel, travel, and repeat outfits constantly. If the one pair of pants fails, the whole suit becomes a problem.

Mission Grade suits solve that by starting with real missionary use in mind. Our washable flex suits are two-pant suits with stretch, breathability, and easy-care construction. They are built for biking, walking, service assignments, long meetings, and daily wear.

Pants: movement matters

Basic dress pants may look fine at first, but missionaries need more than a sharp crease.

Missionary pants need to handle heat, movement, repeated washing, pocket wear, and long days. Our 4-Way Flex Pants are designed with stretch, comfort, wrinkle resistance, cooling, and practical durability.

The guarantee matters here too. If guaranteed pants do not last, we are the ones who have to pay to replace them. That means we care deeply about fabric, stitching, thread, pocket construction, and fit.

Dresses: modest does not always mean mission-ready

A dress can be modest and still be too fussy, fragile, warm, or impractical for everyday missionary work.

Fast-fashion dresses are often made to be worn a few times and replaced. That is not a good match for a mission, where a Sister may repeat the same favorite dresses over and over.

Mission Grade dresses should feel comfortable, look polished, pack well, and hold up to regular wear. Details like pockets, breathable fabrics, easy care, and timeless design matter more on a mission than they might in a regular wardrobe.

Shoes: church shoes are not always walking shoes

Many dress shoes are built for church, the office, or special occasions. Missionary shoes need to do more.

They need to look appropriate, but they also need support, traction, comfort, durability, and materials that can handle miles of walking and changing weather.

For Elders, that usually means shoes with supportive insoles, strong soles, good traction, and uppers that can be polished and maintained. For Sisters, it means shoes that look current but still protect feet, ankles, knees, and hips during long days.

Why the guarantee matters

We are not guessing from a fashion trend or a Sunday outfit.

We have spent decades outfitting missionaries, listening to families, honoring guarantees, and learning what actually holds up in the mission field. If something fails while your missionary is serving and it is covered by our guarantee, we replace it free of charge.

That protects your missionary and teaches us what works.

The simple rule

If something is built for church, school, or the office, ask one more question:

Is it built for missionary life?

That question can save money, reduce stress, and help your missionary start with gear that is ready for the work ahead.
