Life with a Mission Companion: Tips for Success!

Life with a Mission Companion: Tips for Success!

Serving a mission is an incredible adventure—full of new experiences, new places, and, of course, new people! But perhaps one of the biggest adjustments you’ll face is living and working with a mission companion. For many missionaries, this can be a huge shift. Let’s be honest, most of us don’t spend every waking moment with the same person for six weeks straight before—so it’s totally normal to feel a little overwhelmed at first!

The good news is, you’re not alone. Many missionaries have been in your shoes, and with the right mindset and some helpful tips, you can make this adjustment a lot smoother. Here are a few things that can help you build a strong, positive relationship with your companion while having an amazing mission experience.

1. Pray for Them

One of the simplest but most powerful things you can do for your companion is to pray for them. Pray for their well-being, their growth, and their success. Ask Heavenly Father to help you understand their perspective and help them feel loved. Prayer is a powerful way to soften your heart and strengthen your bond.

2. Serve Them

Serving your companion is one of the most effective ways to build a solid relationship. It’s easy to think that you’ll only have time for your own needs, but taking the time to be there for them can go a long way. Whether it’s doing something kind for them, lending an ear when they need to talk, or simply sharing a laugh, service creates a deeper connection.

3. Work Together

Remember, you and your companion are both doing the Lord’s work! You’re both receiving guidance from the Spirit about where to go, who to teach, and how to serve. When you work together, you’ll find that the Spirit guides both of you in unity, and amazing things can happen when you’re in tune with each other and the Spirit. Collaboration makes the mission more enjoyable and impactful!

4. Pray Together

It’s not just about praying for your companion—it’s also about praying with them. Pray together every day, asking Heavenly Father to help your companionship grow in unity and love. Ask for guidance on how to help each other grow spiritually, and for strength to tackle any challenges that come your way. A companionship that prays together is a companionship that thrives!

5. Talk Highly of Your Companion

How you speak about your companion matters. Always choose to speak highly of them to others—whether that’s to members, people you’re teaching, or other missionaries. Words have power, and showing respect and kindness when talking about your companion builds trust and strengthens your relationship.

6. Love Them

Above all, love your companion. They are there to serve right alongside you, and they’re likely going through many of the same emotions, challenges, and triumphs as you are. You may come from different backgrounds, but you both share the same goal: to serve the Lord and build up His kingdom. Remember, they are doing their best just like you are, and showing them love and compassion is one of the most powerful things you can do.

Embrace the Journey Together!

Adjusting to life with a mission companion can be tough at times, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll have on your mission. Through prayer, service, and a lot of patience, you’ll not only grow closer to your companion but also draw nearer to Heavenly Father. By focusing on unity, love, and teamwork, you’ll discover the true beauty of serving together. Your mission is about learning, growing, and becoming more Christlike—and a big part of that is learning how to work with and love those around you.

So, take a deep breath, trust the process, and enjoy this unique opportunity to grow together in service!
