Count the days between loads of laundry
Think about how many clean shirts he will need before the next wash, with spares for a shirt that is still drying or needs another wash. Eight to ten is a useful starting range, not a replacement for the mission's instructions. Choose short and long sleeves according to those instructions rather than a fixed ratio.
Easy care matters as much as the count. A wrinkle-resistant stretch shirt can save time getting ready and leave less ironing for P-day. Check the care instructions before departure so he knows how to wash and dry what he is taking.
Plan spares around the destination
If shipping to the mission is difficult, consider taking extra shirts and other gear that might wear out. Compare the airline's actual baggage allowance and extra-bag fees with the cost and difficulty of sending replacements later. Taking spares may be the better choice, but the answer depends on the destination and the baggage rules.
This applies to shoes for elders and sisters, too. For anyone with a "firm foundation," check whether larger shoe sizes are available near the mission before relying on buying another pair there. Bring sensible extras within the mission's instructions, your budget, and the luggage allowance.
