Everyday Skills to Practice Before Leaving on a Mission

Checking everything off the shopping list feels good. Knowing how to take care of yourself feels even better, and the weeks before departure are the time to practice, while someone is still close enough to answer questions.

Make dinner from beginning to end

Pick one simple meal. Write the grocery list, check what's already in the kitchen, shop within a budget, cook, and clean up. Run through it until the whole thing feels familiar, then add a second meal that uses some of the same ingredients.

The goal is a reasonable dinner made start to finish without someone else managing every step. Chef skills are optional.

Finish a complete load of laundry

Read the care labels, sort the clothes, measure the detergent, and pick the wash and dry settings. Finish by putting everything away. Practice with the actual clothing your missionary plans to take, so you both learn which pieces need extra time to dry.

Care can differ between items that look nearly identical. The 4-Way Flex Pant Air calls for a cold wash with like colors and low-heat or line drying, while the Dagny Top wants a cold hand wash or a delicate cold cycle, then a hanger to dry on.

Use a small practice budget

Have your missionary track a week of spending: check a balance, then work out what's left after groceries and the other planned expenses. And if a card ever acts up, they should know how to reach the provider through an official channel.

Learn where to find help

Practice navigating Gospel Library and any resources the mission has asked your missionary to use. Keep the important instructions somewhere easy to find, and know who to contact when a question comes up.

Start with one skill this week. Let your missionary do the task, make the ordinary mistakes, and try again.
