Better Mission Gear: How to Compare Cost per Wear

A low price can be a good deal. So can paying a little more for something that fits the daily routine. The question that actually helps is what a purchase will cost over the time it gets used.

Start with comparable items

Compare the same number of shirts, in the right sizes, with the features your missionary needs, and include alterations, shipping, and any required care. A price for one size, or from an expired promotion, won't tell you what your own order will cost.

The department-store price comparison in our original email is out of date now, so for a decision today, build a fresh one from current prices.

Do the simple math

Divide what you pay by the number of times the item will be worn. A $40 shirt worn 100 times costs 40 cents per wear; a $30 shirt worn 50 times costs 60 cents. Those numbers are just to show the math, not a prediction of how long any particular shirt will last.

The estimate gets more useful when you add a realistic replacement allowance and care costs. Write your assumptions down so you can adjust them later.

Compare the features that will get used

The Short Sleeve Flex Shirt has four-way stretch and an expandable collar. The Dagny Top is a lightweight ribbed basic that can work with several outfits. Neither one is a good buy just because it shows up in a package; it still has to fit the missionary and the assignment.

Read the guarantee before counting it as savings

The guarantee applies to specific products and comes with conditions. Before assuming a future replacement will cost nothing, read the full 2-Year Wearproof Guarantee and factor in shipping and exclusions.

Use current product pages and our package information to compare the items on your real list, the things your missionary will actually wear.
